When most people think about tracking weight loss progress, they think about a scale. A number goes down, they feel good. A number goes up or stays the same, they feel discouraged. The problem is that the scale does not tell you anything useful. It cannot tell you whether you lost fat or muscle. It cannot tell you whether your metabolism is getting stronger or weaker. It just shows total body weight, which is one of the least informative numbers in the entire process.
At Washington Trim Clinic in Bellevue, we use a Styku 3D body scanner at every visit. It gives us the information that actually matters for tracking your progress on a GLP-1 medical weight loss program.

This short video shows what the scan process looks like at our Bellevue clinic. The full scan takes about 35 seconds.
What the 3D Body Scan Actually Measures
The Styku scanner captures over 1,200 measurements of your body in a single 35-second scan. From that data, it calculates a complete breakdown of your body composition. Here is what we look at every month for every patient.
Fat Mass
Fat mass is the total amount of fat your body is carrying in pounds. This is the number we most want to see going down. When you are on a GLP-1 program like Semaglutide or Tirzepatide and eating enough protein, fat mass should be dropping consistently each month. If fat mass is not moving, we know something needs to be adjusted in your dose or nutrition plan before you come back the following month.
Lean Mass
Lean mass is everything in your body that is not fat. Muscle, bone, organs, water. When people lose weight too fast or do not eat enough protein, lean mass drops alongside fat mass. That is a problem because losing muscle slows your metabolism and makes it harder to keep the weight off long term. The 3D scan lets us see exactly what you are losing each month so we can make sure you are losing fat, not muscle.
Body Fat Percentage
Body fat percentage tells you what proportion of your total body weight is fat. Two people can weigh exactly the same and have completely different body fat percentages. Someone at 180 pounds with 25% body fat is in a very different place than someone at 180 pounds with 40% body fat. Tracking this number monthly shows us whether your body composition is actually improving, even in months where the scale does not move much.
BMI (Body Mass Index)
BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated from your height and weight. It is one of the standard clinical markers we track. That said, BMI on its own is a limited number because it does not distinguish between fat and muscle. A person with a lot of lean muscle can have a high BMI without actually being overfat. We use BMI alongside fat percentage and fat mass so you get the full picture, not just one number in isolation.
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the number of calories your body burns at rest just to keep your organs functioning. It is calculated from your lean mass and body composition, not just your weight. This number is central to everything we do at Washington Trim Clinic. We use your BMR to set your personal daily calorie target, protein goal, and water intake. And because your BMR changes as your body composition changes, we recalculate it from your new scan every single month. Your nutrition targets are always based on what your body is doing right now, not where it was when you started.
Visceral Fat
Visceral fat is the fat stored around your internal organs, deep inside the abdominal cavity. It is the most metabolically dangerous type of fat and is strongly linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. GLP-1 medications are particularly effective at reducing visceral fat. The 3D scan lets us track this specifically so we can show patients real progress in their most important health numbers, not just their waist size.
Why the Scale Alone Tells You Almost Nothing
Here is a scenario that happens often in weight loss programs. A patient comes in after a full month on the program. The scale is down only 3 pounds. They feel disappointed. But the 3D scan tells a completely different story. Their fat mass dropped by 5 pounds. Their lean mass went up by 2 pounds. Their body fat percentage dropped by 1.5 points. Their visceral fat score improved. Their BMR went up because they gained muscle.
That is an excellent month. But without the 3D scan, that patient walks away thinking they barely made progress. The scale created a false picture. The scan showed reality.
This is exactly why we do not let patients judge their results by a single number. The 3D scan gives us the full story every time.
How We Use Scan Results to Personalize Your Program
After every monthly scan, we do not just show you numbers and send you home. We use those results to update your entire program for the next month.
- Your calorie target is recalculated from your new BMR
- Your protein goal is updated based on your current lean mass
- Your water intake target is adjusted to match your body weight and composition
- Your GLP-1 dose is reviewed and adjusted based on your results and how you are feeling
Every number we give you is specific to your body at that point in time. This is very different from programs that hand you a generic meal plan or a fixed calorie number and leave you to figure out the rest.
What to Expect at Your Scan Appointment
The scan itself takes about 35 seconds. You stand on a rotating platform fully clothed while the scanner captures your full body measurements. There is nothing uncomfortable about it. No pinching, no measuring tape, no changing clothes. After the scan, we sit down with you and go through your results together. You leave knowing exactly where your body is, what changed since last month, and what your targets are for the month ahead.
Your first scan happens at your very first consultation, which is always free. We do not approve anyone for GLP-1 treatment without first understanding their body composition. That scan is the starting point for everything.
